Land and forest fires in Indonesia has become a serious concern of the country’s leaders. More supporting tools and instruments are subsequently added to the effort to put out the fire as well as mitigate the damaging impacts. Recently, more helicopters are ready to be deployed to put out land and forest fire in Central Kalimantan.

Antara reports that the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is ready to deploy more the flying vehicles to put out land and forest fire in Kalimantan. The agency’s head Doni Monardo explained, the beginning of this month of August that his team is ready to deploy the choppers whenever requested by the provincial administration.

Doni stipulates his and his organization’s commitment to assisting local governments to overcome land and forest fires. “We are here now to give support to Central Kalimantan Provincial Government, the Indonesian Military, the police and local people to prevent land and forest fires,” said Doni in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, as reported by Antara.

In addition to help the effort to resolve the forest fire matter, people are expected to stop slash and burn practice to clear the land. Consequently, that action would initiate bigger fire and it would be very difficult to extinguish the fires ravaging peatland areas.

On July 29, at least 27 hotspots were detected in Riau, 26 in Jambi, 14 in Central Kalimantan, 12 in West Kalimantan, and five in South Sumatra.

The Central Kalimantan has become one of crucial areas where emergency status for land and forest fires have been declared. Currently, of the total 13 districts/cities in Central Kalimantan, seven districts and one city have declared emergency status. The Provincial Government says that the authority has deployed six water bombing helicopters and one patrol helicopter.

Efforts to increase the public attention toward the forest fire issues need to be improved. In doing so, Indonesia calls on the media to disclose and disseminate information on the location of the fires, including names of the land owners. This effort is hoped to become a deterrent effect for them. (*)
